Beyond Meat Hot Italian Sausages Review

Loading

If you’ve been around here before, you’ll know I can not handle spicy foods. I have a very low spicy tolerance, and very, very rarely eat spicy foods willingly.

That said, when the Beyond Meat Hot Italian Sausages came to Canada, I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to review them.

AterImber.com - The Veg Life - Product Reviews - Beyond Meat Hot Italian Sausages Review - Beyond Meat Sausages Package - food reviews, product reviews, food reviewer, sausages, vegan, vegan food, vegan meat, meat alternatives

I first tried these sausages back in March of last year (2021), and I have to say, I was actually pleasantly surprised!

Similar to the Beyond Meat Burgers, these sausages had a very similar texture to meat sausages (or at least, from what I remember) and even seemed to have a ‘skin’ or casing on them.

These sausages are very meaty tasting, and smelling. Which is great, if that’s your thing! If you’re looking for a plant-based alternative to replace meat products without compromising on taste or texture, these are definitely the sausages for you!

As I’ve said in previous reviews, I’m a fan of plants that taste like plants. Give me a mushroom burger that tastes like mushrooms, and I won’t complain. These sausages, as well as the Beyond Meat burgers… honestly, I think it’s amazing that we can make plants taste that close to meat products, but it’s just not really my thing.

I don’t know quite what it is, but even just smelling the ‘meat’ smell makes me mildly nauseous. Like my body is screaming no, don’t eat that! at me, even though I know it’s made out of plants, and is not a dead body.

For me personally, it’s too close to meat for me to be a big fan of them, or to add them to my regular shopping list. Once in a while is fine, but I really can’t handle them more than that. I just don’t crave that meaty taste – even back before I went vegan, I stayed away from pretty much every meat that wasn’t chicken/turkey, because I just didn’t like the taste – so it’s actually not surprising that I still don’t really dig that flavour.

AterImber.com - The Veg Life - Product Reviews - Beyond Meat Hot Italian Sausages Review - Beyond Meat Sausages Close Up - food reviews, product reviews, food reviewer, sausages, vegan, vegan food, vegan meat, meat alternatives

Beyond Sausage close up

Not only were these sausages super meaty, but they also definitely lived up to their Hot name. They were spicy. Like, take three bites and burn the back of my throat spicy. Now, as said above, I have a very low spice tolerance, so you may not find them that spicy, but honestly, these messed up my digestion I imagine the same way eating hot wings messes with other people. It was not pretty, nor fun.

Even just thinking back to eating them is making me want to chug a bunch of water. I definitely am a bigger fan of the Mild sausages, though I also found those spicy. Not as bad, but they definitely still had a kick.

I did notice however, that if I chopped up the sausages and mixed them into something else, it did significantly reduce the spicy effects. So, that’s also an option, if you’re worried about how spicy they are.

AterImber.com - The Veg Life - Product Reviews - Beyond Meat Hot Italian Sausages Review - Beyond Meat Sausages In Mr. Noodles - food reviews, product reviews, food reviewer, sausages, vegan, vegan food, vegan meat, meat alternatives

Beyond Sausage cut up in a Mr. Noodle stir fry

One thing I definitely don’t like about these sausages, is the packaging. They come in a cardboard container, that’s wrapped in plastic. Also, they only come 4 to a package. I’ve complained about this in other reviews, but seriously, if you want to offer that little in a package, at least have a bigger packaging option. Why not make them available in an 8, or hell, even a 6 pack would be better.

Beyond Meat now makes Breakfast Sausages that come in an 8 pack, so I don’t understand why these big ones can’t also. I’m not for sure on this, but the breakfast links also appear to come in a cardboard box, instead of plastic, which again begs the question: why can’t the big sausages come the same?

I know this review may seem like it’s negative, so I want to be clear: I’m in no way trying to trash this product. I think it’s amazing and crazy that Beyond Meat has figured out a way to make plants taste that close to meat products. It’s truly an incredible achievement, and said above, if you’re someone who’s looking to quell your meat cravings without eating the real thing, you would be hard pressed to find a better sausage than these.

These sausages aren’t something I personally will be buying very often, but I’m still definitely recommending them!

3 Easy Vegan Summer Dips

Loading

This article was written 22.03.02, please excuse any reference/joke to COVID pre-cautions that’s no longer accurate.

Summer is the perfect time to have get-togethers and BBQ’s with friends and family. The one usual annoying thing about this, is you’re asked to bring ‘something’.

Now sure, it’s to lessen the burden on the hosts, and what kind of guest doesn’t feel a little guilty when they don’t bring at least something to a get together?

But, what if it’s too hot to turn the stove on? Are you expected to sweat your ass off before going to socialize? Or, what if you’re not a great – or even okay – cook? Should your friends and family suffer through whatever failed attempt at food you bring? How is that fair?

Well, not to worry! I’m here to show you 3 very simple, yet delicious dips you can bring. This will eliminate any sweating, as none of the below require cooking, and the only ‘cooking’ skills you need, is being able to throw everything together in a container.

  1. Ranch

AterImber.com - The Veg Life - Vegan Tips - Vegan Recipes - Easy Vegan Dips - HotforFood Ranch - vegan, vegan food, food blogger, vegan ranch

A classic dip, which is perfect for any occasion, but especially shines during the summer, this ranch is the perfect, easy dip to prepare.

This is a bastardized version of HotforFood’s Ranch dip from Vegan Comfort Classics, so if you’d rather make the original, you can go ahead and do so.

This version is kind of the ‘lazy’ version of Lauren’s – it’s less ingredients, but still has the taste you want when making a ranch dip.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp Vegan Mayo (I use Hellmann’s Carefully Crafted Dressing and Sandwich Spread, which is pretty much vegan Miracle Whip)
  • 1tsp of Dill
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp vinegar

Directions:

  1. Scoop everything into a suitable sized container. Stir to combine.

That’s it!

It’s super simple, yet has amazing flavour! And, the best part, is you can even reduce this recipe down to just the mayo and dill and it will still pretty much taste the same as the more complicated version.

It was in making Lauren’s recipe I discovered that dill is the seasoning that gives dishes that classic ‘summer’ taste, so that’s basically all you need to transform the mayo into a suitable summer dip.

You can also obviously increase the measurements if you’re going to be bringing this dip to a get together. The above recipe makes a very small amount of dip – I’d say… maybe around half a cups worth, or less.

I usually don’t make this dip in big quantities, because I’m not very good at meal planning, so I usually decide to make it after I finish making whatever else I was doing and then realize, ‘crap, I forgot to make a dip’.

2. French Onion Dip

AterImber.com - The Veg Life - Vegan Tips - Vegan Recipes - Easy Vegan Dips - French Onion Dip - vegan, vegan food, food blogger, summer, summer recipe ideas, vegan french onion dip

Excuse the messiness, I mixed it right in the container.

I’m gonna be honest, I actually have no idea what the difference between ‘onion dip’ and ‘French onion dip’ is, because from what I could tell, all the recipes I found online seemed the same. So technically, this could just be ‘onion dip’, but I think it sounds fancier this way. (Maybe that’s the difference?)

Regardless of what you choose to name it, one thing I’m sure you’ll call it, is ‘tasty’.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tbsp Sour Cream
  • 2 tsp Onion Flakes
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp Salt

Directions:

1. Mix all ingredients together in whatever bowl/container you’d like. Whatever you choose, make sure it is safe to go in the fridge.

2. Once combine, place in fridge for minimum of 2 hours. (This will help enhance the flavour, and allow the sour cream to get re-firmed, if mixing turned it too runny)

Once it’s been cooled to perfection, you can go ahead and enjoy this bad boy using almost anything: veggies, chips, even just straight up bread would taste great dipped in this stuff!

Just be sure to brush your teeth after eating. Unless you want to use it as a deterrent for avoiding certain family members. In which case, dip away! 😉

3. Paprika Mayo

AterImber.com - The Veg Life - Vegan Tips - Vegan Recipes - Easy Vegan Dips - Paprika Mayo - vegan, vegan food, food blogger, vegan mayo, Hellman's Vegan Sandwich Spread, summer, summer recipe ideas

This one, I’ve actually only used as a spread on various sandwiches (a TLT [tempeh, lettuce, tomato], avocado toast, salad wraps, etc.) but I think it would be good as a dip, as well. I’m also not sure if Paprika Mayo is a thing other people have heard of/made, or something my brother made up, but it’s definitely delicious, and, super simple to make!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp Vegan Mayo
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder (optional)

Directions:

  1. Add all ingredients to a container and stir until combined.

And that’s it!

Now you can impress at any summer get-togethers you may have, while keeping your house cool as a cucumber. Not to mention, because these are so fast to whip up, you’ll also have plenty of time to enjoy these few good weather months before winter returns. Get out of your kitchen and soak up that sun while you can!

Also, as you might have noticed, these recipes are for very minimal amounts of these dips. This is because contrary to the point of this post, I actually tend to make these dips when I want them, not for get togethers. (Also, since COVID broke the world, get-togethers have been back burned indefinitely) And since I try to vary what I eat on a daily basis, I tend to only make them in small batches, so I can finish them off within 1 to 2 days.

Don’t worry, though. The ratios are the same whether you’re making them for just you, or to feed a whole family. There are plenty of measurement converters you can find online to help you out making bigger batches.

I’m also not too sure how long exactly these dips would last in the fridge, since I tend to finish them within 2 days. If I had to guess though, I’d say to eat them within 1 week, just to be on the safe side.

Do you have any favourite simple homemade dips? Let me know in the comments below!

NFF, Song!Fic, Fluff

Based on the song Beer In The Headlights by Luke Bryan. (Listen to the song here!)

He watches in wide-eyed amazement as she jumps out of his truck, floating over to stand in the middle of the dirt road. She starts swaying in the headlights, and he can’t help but smile as he reaches over, turning up the radio.

She returns his smile as the music gets louder, and points at him with the hand that’s holding her plastic cup. She wiggles her eyebrows at him before turning around, small dust cloud rising up around her ankles at the action. He shakes his head, so engrossed with watching her dance, even thinking about moving seemed ridiculous.

She narrows her eyes at him as she takes a sip from her cup, before gesturing again, more insistently than before. He chuckles before nodding, hopping down out of his truck bed, glad it was dark so she wouldn’t see the blush that crept up his face.

He joins her in the headlights, stomach fluttering as her smile widens. She closes the distance between them, gently draping her arms around his neck. She drops down off her tiptoes just as the song fades out.

He can’t fight off his urge any longer, and steals her cup from her, swallowing down the mouthful that was left before placing it down on the hood of the truck. Her brows furrow in confusion as another song starts. Before she can speak, he captures her lips with his, easily lifting her off the road, smiling against her mouth as her legs instinctively wrap around his waist.

He slowly walks them over to his waiting truck bed. He carefully sits down on the edge, adjusting his hands so he’s holding her hips. They break for air as he pushes the cooler backward, before laying himself down on his back. The image of her there, long brown hair blowing in the gentle breeze, smiling down at him against a backdrop of millions of shining stars makes his stomach flutter again. He can’t help but smile as she tucks some hair behind her ear, before beginning to unbutton her shirt, this is my last first date.

Glitter (PHSH Effect #20)

Loading

This article was written 21.11.25, please excuse any reference/joke that’s no longer applicable.

Now that it’s summer and we’re finally getting to go back outside in the nice weather, the timing couldn’t be more perfect to pivot away from the ‘depressing’ rain effect I showed you last time, and show you how to make something much ‘happier’: Glitter!

AterImber.com - PHSH Tutorials - PHSH Effect 20 Glitter - Glitter Steps Finished - phsh effect, photoshop, photoshop tutorials, glitter, indie authors, books, book covers, author help, writing tips

Also, Pride is this month, so it seemed extra fitting, albeit a little cliché.

Let’s get started!

Step 1

First step for this effect, is you’ll need to find a Glitter Texture picture, and have a picture you want to add glitter to. For simplicity, I’m going to be doing this tutorial with a picture of an eye, and apply the glitter to look like eye shadow.

That said, you can definitely use this technique to add glitter in more fantasy-based pictures, if needed. (I’ll show you an example at the end of the tutorial)

I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned this yet or not, but if you haven’t found a good royalty-free website to get pictures from (unfortunately you can’t just use Google-d pictures for book covers), Pixabay and Pexels are great websites.

Once you have both pictures, open a new PHSH project, and place both the glitter, and base picture into it, and resize if necessary. Then, (if needed), drag the glitter layer so it’s on top of the base picture.

AterImber.com - Writing - Writing Tips - Photoshop Tutorial Series - Glitter (Effect 20) - Step 1 - phsh, phsh tutorials, photo manips, books, book covers, indie author, book cover tips, writing help

You can also change the glitter layer’s Opacity so you can see the base picture through the layer.

AterImber.com - Writing - Writing Tips - Photoshop Tutorial Series - Glitter (Effect 20) - Step 2 - phsh, phsh tutorials, photo manips, books, book covers, indie author, book cover tips, writing help

Step 2

Once you have your pictures set, we’re going to use the Eraser tool to erase parts of the glitter picture we don’t need. Using a pretty big sized brush, and a high percent of Hardness, start erasing the parts of the glitter picture you don’t need.

AterImber.com - Writing - Writing Tips - Photoshop Tutorial Series - Glitter (Effect 20) - Step 3 1 - phsh, phsh tutorials, photo manips, books, book covers, indie author, book cover tips, writing help

In my case, this would be everything except for the part of the picture that’s covering the upper eyelid.

AterImber.com - Writing - Writing Tips - Photoshop Tutorial Series - Glitter (Effect 20) - Step 3 2 - phsh, phsh tutorials, photo manips, books, book covers, indie author, book cover tips, writing help

Step 3

Once you’ve erased everything on the glitter layer you don’t need, you can go ahead and change it’s Opacity back to 100%.

AterImber.com - Writing - Writing Tips - Photoshop Tutorial Series - Glitter (Effect 20) - Step 4 1 - phsh, phsh tutorials, photo manips, books, book covers, indie author, book cover tips, writing help

While still in the Layers panel, go over to the Blend Mode (which is the drop-down menu directly to the left of the Opacity), and change it from Normal to Overlay, or Screen. Use whichever one looks best with the picture you have. In my case, I used Overlay.

AterImber.com - Writing - Writing Tips - Photoshop Tutorial Series - Glitter (Effect 20) - Step 4 2 - phsh, phsh tutorials, photo manips, books, book covers, indie author, book cover tips, writing help

Step 4

Once this is done, go ahead and clean up the edges of the glitter layer, if needed. You can also slightly lower the Opacity if you need to. Depending on your image, I wouldn’t make it too low, though, since you want the glitter to be seen over the picture.

AterImber.com - Writing - Writing Tips - Photoshop Tutorial Series - Glitter (Effect 20) - Step 5 - phsh, phsh tutorials, photo manips, books, book covers, indie author, book cover tips, writing help

And there you have it! A simple way to add glitter to most pictures.

AterImber.com - PHSH Tutorials - PHSH Effect 20 Glitter - Glitter Steps Finished - phsh effect, photoshop, photoshop tutorials, glitter, indie authors, books, book covers, author help, writing tips

Obviously, this is a pretty simple way to show you how to add glitter to something. However, the steps are almost exactly the same, even if you, for example, wanted to make a vampire/give a person glittery skin.

AterImber.com - Writing - Writing Tips - Photoshop Tutorial Series - Glitter (Effect 20) - Vampire Girl - phsh, phsh tutorials, photo manips, books, book covers, indie author, book cover tips, writing help

For this image, I started with the exact same steps as above, but I ended up lowering the Opacity a little more, and, I also right-clicked on the glitter layer and used the Warp function to give it a slightly ‘bent’ appearance, so it would look more like it was attached to the girl’s skin.

Warping the glitter layer is an optional step. I’ve found it tends to only work with certain images, while on others, you can’t tell at all that it was used.

But go ahead and play around to see what works best for you.

You’ll want to get pretty good at applying glitter to images, because the next tutorial I’m gonna be showing you is an effect that just so happens to pair well with this one:

Destiel (Implied), Sabriel (Implied), Crobby, C2C, Unlearning Series Fic #10

“I thought you were gonna drop it?”

Dean sputtered, gesturing to the bedroom, “Dropping it isn’t the same as giving him my blessing.”

Cas rolled his eyes, plopping himself down on the bed, letting out an annoyed groan. He’d been trying to talk Dean into finally agreeing to let Crowley pop the question for weeks – to no avail. Hell, all of them – him, Sam, even Gabriel had tried, but Dean was nothing if not stubborn. And when Dean Winchester had made up his mind about something, he was hard pressed to change it.

Not that it stopped them all from trying. None of them could understand why the blonde was being so stubborn. Crowley had saved his life – same as Gabriel – but that apparently didn’t matter. Dean just wasn’t budging.

“Are you forgetting he saved you?”

“Oh, please!” Dean crinkled his nose, waving a dismissive hand at the angel, “I’m so sick of hearing that! It’s not like I asked him to save me!”

Cas felt the anger bubble up in his chest again, and he rose from the bed, “So you would’ve been just as happy if he didn’t? If that demon had killed you, oh well?”

“No, Cas, you know that’s not what I mean!” Dean scrubbed a hand through his hair, whole body tense, why can’t I make you understand? “It’s just-”

“What, Dean? He’s what?”

“H-he… he’s still….”

“Yeah…?”

“He’s still him!”

“He’s changed!”

“People don’t change!”

“But he’s not even a person!”

“Exactly!” Dean let out a humourless chuckle, “If people don’t change, demons for sure as shit aren’t gonna!”

Cas threw up his hands, “How can you still be so…. so you about this?” Cas forced himself to take a deep breath, and walked the few steps over to the now-retired hunter, “He makes Bobby happy. Don’t you think he deserves that?”

“Of course I do.” Dean’s tone was lowering to match the angel’s, even though his chest was still huffing, “I just don’t think Crowley is right for him.”

“Okay, fine. Then who would you pick?”

Dean blinked in surprise at his angel, “What?”

Cas gave him a pointed look, crossing his arms over his chest, “You think you can do a better job finding someone for Bobby? Go ahead, pick someone.”

“W-well,” Dean shifted his weight, “I… I don’t know anyone off the top of my head-”

“Uh-huh.”

The corner of the blonde’s mouth twitched, “You know what? Fine! I will find someone better for Bobby, and when I do, all you guys have to drop this.”

“Fine,” Cas stuck out his hand for them to shake on it, pulling the ex-hunter in close once their hands touched, “But if you can’t, you will give Crowley your blessing.”

Dean’s eyes narrowed, searching the angel’s face for a moment, before he nodded, “Deal.”

Kelly’s Triple Fudge Brownie Review

Loading

I’ve been very excited to try other products from Kelly’s ever since I tried their Salted Caramel Pretzel Cupcake during one of the Vegandale Festivals. I thought for sure I’d be out of luck after learning they were located in Burlington, but fortunately, they deliver to Toronto!

Wanting to try something new last year (2021) for Valentine’s Day, I decided to go ahead and place an order. Now, I’m not sure if it was just me, or the way their shop operates, but their website didn’t have too many offerings at the time I placed my order. Wanting to not go crazy, as well as remain practical (as I was planning on sharing some of the baked goods with friends and family), I decided to go with their Triple Fudge Brownie. Since it was flat, I figured it would be the safest to carry for travel.

AterImber.com - The Veg Life - Product Reviews - Kelly's Bakeshop Triple Fudge Brownie Review - Small Brownie Tray - food reviews, product reviews, food reviewer, brownies, vegan, vegan food, vegan baking

Small brownie tray

I ended up choosing the Small Tray size of their brownie to share, as well as two loose brownies to try beforehand – this way, I could test them myself before giving out possibly bad-tasting baked goods.

Luckily though, their brownie was amazing, and even my non-vegan friend enjoyed it!

Kelly’s Triple Fudge Brownies were firstly a lot bigger in size than I thought they’d be. The ones I got loose were roughly the size of my palm, and were also very sturdy.

AterImber.com - The Veg Life - Product Reviews - Kelly's Bakeshop Triple Fudge Brownie Review - Pink Box of Loose Brownies - food reviews, product reviews, food reviewer, brownies, vegan, vegan food, vegan baking

The loose brownies came in this cute pink box!

I don’t know if I’ve just had suck-y brownies before, but other brownies I’ve tried were closer in consistency to a cupcake than this was. This one felt a lot denser than ones I’ve previously tried – but not in a bad way!

I was also surprised that it was very soft to bite into, and reminded me of eating ice cream. Soft, yet firm. That said, the brownie was also not overly sweet like some other desserts. You know how sometimes you eat a cupcake and the second it goes into your mouth, your tongue almost recoils because it’s so sweet? That didn’t happen with this brownie.

AterImber.com - The Veg Life - Product Reviews - Kelly's Bakeshop Triple Fudge Brownie Review - Brownie Cut in Half - food reviews, product reviews, food reviewer, brownies, vegan, vegan food, vegan baking

Brownie cut in half – like this, you can clearly see where the ganache ends and the brownie begins.

The website also said that the brownie had a chocolate ganache on top, which you can tell by looking at the brownie – the top of it is more of a lighter brown than the rest of it. The ganache also kind of flaked off the top when eating it. This worked out though, because the brownie was the type of dark chocolate that makes you thirsty, so picking up the ganache piece after eating it and letting it melt in your mouth helped with the dryness.

It was actually quite weird, now that I think about it. The brownie was dry, but not dry. I thought at first this may have been because the loose brownies were most likely made during the morning, but I didn’t receive the order until later in the day. You know that sort of dryness baked goods get if you leave them out on the counter? It was similar to that. (Though of course, I can’t say for sure whether or not the brownies were sitting around, and I’m in no way accusing Kelly’s of doing this)

AterImber.com - The Veg Life - Product Reviews - Kelly's Bakeshop Triple Fudge Brownie Review - Whole Loose Brownies - food reviews, product reviews, food reviewer, brownies, vegan, vegan food, vegan baking

How the two loose brownies looked in the pink box.

My non-vegan friend said they liked the brownie as well. They said they weren’t sure if they would call it ‘fudge’ per se, but that it ‘definitely was a good chocolate brownie, was nice and flaky and surprisingly not crumbly’. (They ‘only made 4 crumbs’ when eating it)

AterImber.com - The Veg Life - Product Reviews - Kelly's Bakeshop Triple Fudge Brownie Review - Kelly's Bag - food reviews, product reviews, food reviewer, brownies, vegan, vegan food, vegan baking

Another thing I liked about this brownie, and the Kelly’s company in general, is the fact the order came in a paper bag, instead of a plastic one. Granted, the containers that the actual brownies were in were plastic, but I liked that they at least didn’t have unnecessary plastic.

One thing I didn’t like about this order, was the price. Now, I know Kelly’s is a small, family owned bakeshop, and I did make them deliver from Burlington to Toronto (around Victoria Park and Danforth), however, my order total was $48.39, not including the tip. Considering I only got 2 items, this just seemed like a lot to me.

Another thing I didn’t like was the way the website would time out if you were taking too long to complete the order. I understand this is probably for inventory purposes, but it was annoying when I had to keep restarting my order, even though I stayed on the website. (I was trying to find ingredient information)

That said, Kelly’s had amazing customer service, and was overall very pleasant to do business with, aside from those two things. I definitely recommend you check them out and place an order with them, if you’re within the delivery zone (or can go and do a pick-up), and I look forward to placing more orders with them in future!

Soap Nuts: My Experience (Eco Nuts Soap Nuts Sample Review)

Loading

This article is talking about soap nuts. To save time, I’ve shortened this to  ‘nuts’ during most of the article, resulting in some… funny sentences. Please try to excuse these as you read through the article.

Like before committing to doing most things, I did some research about soap nuts long before I decided to try them.

In my research, I learned that soap nuts grow primarily in two places: the Himalayan mountains, and Canada. Being in Canada, I thought it would make more sense for me to try some soap nuts that were native here. If for nothing else, it would be pretty wasteful/silly of me to ship something in from another country that naturally grows here, right?

Right. Or, so you’d think.

Apparently, Canadian soap nuts (which are commonly referred to as ‘buffalo berries’), are considered endangered, and thus are not available for purchase. While I understand wanting to preserve the plant (you can’t even buy the seeds to plant your own!), as said above, it seems silly for Canadian who want a more natural laundry detergent to have to spend money on shipping a native plant from the Himalayas.

AterImber.com - No. Mad. - Eco Nuts Soap Nuts Sampler Review - Eco Nuts Sampler Box - sustainability, indie author, blogger, soap nuts, laundry, natural laundry detergent, detergent alternatives, natural cleaners

That said, I really wanted to see if they were worth the hype, so I found this company called Eco Nuts, and ordered their sample pack of soap nuts in late May, 2021. (They arrived early June) This was a Canadian company that unfortunately no longer exists (they were already going out of business when I placed my order). I had naively thought that if I was ordering from a Canadian company, I would be getting the Canadian buffalo berries.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case, as their About page stated that their nuts were from the Himalayan mountains.

The quest for buying Canadian soap nuts aside, I was actually very impressed with how well they worked, and was even gifted a bag of soap nuts from the biggest Canadian distributor, Sinfully Wholesome for Christmas in 2021, so I thankfully have a lot of soap nuts to go through while I try to figure out another more natural, native solution.

Even though it was a sample box, the Eco Nuts Sample was a lot smaller than I thought it’d be. I had no idea how big the berries were, or how many I’d get to fulfill 10 loads of laundry (as the sample pack page said).

Turns out, 4 whole berries + 1 half and a mesh bag was all I apparently needed.

Now, I’m going to be honest, I ended up reading the FAQ page wrong at first, so my soap nuts didn’t last for 10 loads.

See, the way soap nuts work is that they have this thing called saponin in them, which is the part that makes them actually clean stuff. It’s also the thing we try to replicate when making man-made soaps. To get the nuts to secrete it, you have to agitate the nuts (or rub them together in your hands) and use some warm water to soften the hard exterior shell, so it can seep out.

Now, as someone who has a lot of dark-coloured clothes, I basically exclusively wash all my clothes in cold water, because using hot water a) is bad for them, since it could make the colours bleed, or shrink them, and b) uses unnecessary resources/heat and therefore, wastes money. (And let’s be honest, not many of us have ‘extra’ money to blow on something so small)

Anyway, so on the Eco Nuts FAQ page, it said that if you were going to wash clothes in cold water, you could still use the nuts, just that you had to make a sort of tea with them – put the nuts in the mesh bag, and then pour boiling/hot water on them, let them soak (to get the saponin out), then pour the ‘tea’ into the washing machine, then wash as normal.

The part of that I seemed to miss, was the part that said you’re supposed to pour both the tea and the bag of nuts in the washer, because they will still secrete some saponins, because of the agitation of the machine. So the very first load I did with them, I just dumped the tea in, and left the nuts out.

Soap nut ‘tea’, I used a chopstick as a stir stick.

Honestly though, I did it exactly the way I make tea, meaning I boiled water in my kettle, and immediately poured it over the nuts, so I think I took out all the saponins that were inside them. Which isn’t necessarily bad, but I think because I did this, I kind of screwed myself for the following loads.

The first tea I made, the colour was a dark brown colour, and it actually looked like I had made tea with them. The second tea I made, the water colour barely changed. And the third time I made the tea, it didn’t change colours at all.

Aside from that, when I made the first ‘tea’, I discovered that the nuts had a faint smell to them while they were soaking. It wasn’t a bad smell per se, but it also wasn’t good. It faintly smelled like clean laundry, but also had a… pungent-ness that definitely wasn’t apitizing. Which I guess is good, because even though they’re called soap nuts, you’re not really supposed to eat them.

Close up of a dry soap nut and the mesh bag, fresh out of the sample pack.

After washing my clothes as normal, using the tea, when I pulled them out to put the in the dryer, I smelled them, and they didn’t smell like anything. They didn’t smell dirty/unclean, but they also didn’t have that artificial ‘cleanliness’ smell that most detergents leave. They were neutral.

Some people may not like their clothes smelling like nothing, but honestly since I started this more natural living journey, I found it actually quite refreshing. I don’t know if it’s my mind playing tricks, or something that happens once you start cutting out a lot of man-made chemical products from your day-to-day, but I’ve actually notice myself becoming more sensitive to those chemical smells.

And the weirdest part is they never used to bother me before! I used to just smell the smell, and not the chemicals, if that makes sense. I used to find it pleasant, and now I just… don’t. Whether it’s laundry detergent, certain soaps and shampoos, dryer sheets, or aerosol sprays, they’re just not things I want around me, anymore. (Not that I wanted them around me anyways, but that was ‘just the way it was’)

The website also said that soap nuts had natural anti-static and anti-cling properties, so you wouldn’t need a dryer sheet when drying. I’d been not using dryer sheets for a little bit before that (I made some homemade ones and had been using those) so I didn’t bother tossing in a ‘regular’ (store-bought) dryer sheet, or a homemade one.

The clothes came out not static-y at all, but I don’t think this was more the material of the clothes I was washing, and not the soap nuts themselves, because on a later load, I did the same thing, and the clothes came out very static-y.

I only ended up using this pack of soap nuts for 4 loads of laundry, because as I said above, the ‘tea’ I made seemed to get much weaker after the 1st time. I still have the nuts and the bag, though. I was actually going to save them to do a comparison for this article, so you could see the difference between new and dried up soap nuts.

Soap nuts air-drying after being through the washer.

I say ‘was’ because while I can see with my eye that the nuts are a different colour, for some reason, the difference hardly shows up on my phone camera. I don’t know if there’s some colour setting I need to change, or if it’s just a lighting thing, but I couldn’t get a good comparison picture, so you’ll just have to use your imagination.

You can definitely tell the used nuts are a lighter when compared to not-used nuts. They most likely will also not remain whole by the time you’re done with them. Especially if making ‘tea’ with them, you’ll need to stir them around in the water to make sure the saponins are actually coming out. Submerging the nuts like this makes them soft, and thus more prone to breaking.

All in all, I definitely think soap nuts are a great alternative for people looking to change to a more natural laundry detergent/cleaner. I also think if you’re able to get your hands on some (sustainably, of course), you should definitely test them out for yourself!

Son of a Bitch! (#4)

Gen.

“Son of a bitch!”

Sam bashed his head on the window in his haste to sit up. He brought a hand up to rub at the side of his head, frowning with confusion as his eyes landed on the empty driver’s seat. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes as he moved them to the windshield, spotting his brother staring at something laying on the road in front of the car.

The giant rolled down his window, doing his best to push his sleepiness down, “What happened?”

The blonde shook his head, kicking at whatever was in front of the Impala, “Ran over a squirrel.”

Sam’s brows furrowed, “What?”

“A squirrel!” He gestured to the road, “It was a fat one!”

“So?”

Dean scoffed, “His guts are all over the front of the car!” He shook his head before making his way back to the driver’s seat, “I just cleaned her, too!”

“Sioux Falls has a car wash,” Sam rolled his window back up, stifling a yawn, “we can run through it before we go to Bobby’s.”

“No, we can’t.” Dean shook his head as he pulled back out onto the road, “We’re on our way there to help with a vamp nest. She’s just gonna get dirty again.”

“Then you can wash her after the hunt.” Sam’s brows furrowed as he leaned his head against the window again, eyes slipping closed, “What’s the big deal?”

The blonde let out a sigh, “I just…” his voice trailed off before he cleared his throat, “Nothing. Never mind.”

Sam adjusted his position, so his neck wasn’t so craned leaning against the window. He listened to the tires rolling down the road, the gentle whoosh of the wind flying passed the car, and his brother’s breathing. The sounds worked together like a lullaby, pulling him back toward sleep. He groaned in annoyance as he felt a whack to his shoulder, not bother to open his eyes, “What?”

He heard the blonde take in a breath, pausing before whatever he was gonna say came out of his mouth. The youngest heard him adjust his grip on the steering wheel, “You’re drooling on the window.”

“You know where we could go to fix that?”

“Fine, fine! We’ll take her to a car wash.” Even with his eyes closed, he could see his brother shake his head, “Gonna need industrial strength cleaner to get your nasty salad-drool off the glass, anyway.”

“That’s the spirit.”

“Yeah, yeah. Just shut up and enjoy your sleep, Bitch.”

“Jerk.”

Where Do Vegans Get Their Vitamin C?

Loading

Vitamin C is one of the more popular nutrients people talk about. Maybe it’s because that’s the nutrient people focus on when they catch a cold – everyone knows when you’re sick/have a cold to drink orange juice to replenish your Vitamin C.

But what you might not know, is that oranges actually aren’t the best source.
