“Has anyone else seen this report?”
Nancy, the new DNA analyst, blinked in surprise at Peter’s question, “Um… I-I don’t think so.”
Jones came into the conference room then, shaking his head, “He’s not at his desk.”
“Damn it, Neal!” Peter was out of his seat and rubbing a hand down his face in the next instant. He took a not-so-calming deep breath before bringing his eyes back to the doorway, “Jones, pull up his tracking data.”
“On it.”
Peter rounded back to the new girl, who was shifting uncomfortably in her seat, “Are you sure Caffrey didn’t see this?”
“I-I…” Nancy’s eyes were wide and she cast her gaze down to the table.
Peter raised his eyebrows, and when she just let her voice trail off, he flashed an exasperated expression to Diana.
Diana got up from her chair and walked the few steps closer to the pair, leaning her hands on the table, “Look, you’re not in trouble. We just need to know if Neal saw the document.”
Nancy began to chew her lower lip at that, and purposefully kept her gaze on the table in front of her.
“Nancy,” Peter did his best to soften his tone, “Neal has a tendency to do…” Peter flicked his eyes up to Diana for a moment, “reckless things when it comes to protecting the people he cares about. This report is for a suspect in his best friend’s murder.”
Nancy’s fingers twirled into the end of her sweater, a small smile on her face, “He did seem… kind of intense.”
“So you did talk to him?” Peter resisted the urge to roll his eyes at her nod, “When?”
“H-he, um, he brought me coffee a little while ago, but I-”
Peter was across the conference room in the next instant, “Diana, get a team to Boyle’s house.”
“You got it, boss.”
Jones nearly bumped into Peter as he came flying out of the doorway, “Whoa, sorry. The tracking map for Caffrey’s anklet was blank.”
“What?” That stopped Peter in his tracks, “Why?”
