Important: This is the 2nd last article for 2023. I’ll be taking the last half of December and first half of January off from posting.
I’ll be back January 12th, 2024 with the first short story of the new year! (The first article will go up January 15th)
I was curious to find a new alternative to VeganEgg since it was harder to find (and more expensive when it was found), which is how I stumbled upon these Eggcitables.
I first tried them back in August of 2021 and I have to say, while I appreciate the idea of them, the execution was lack-luster.
Let’s start with the good: the idea of Eggcitables. For those who don’t know, this product is made out of chickpea flour, meaning they’re a soy-free, gluten-free alternative to other vegan egg products.
While this sounds like a great idea (and their mascot is super cute) it unfortunately doesn’t stand up against the likes of VeganEgg or even Just Egg.
When I first opened the bag, I was immediately hit with a floury smell, and it wasn’t until I added the water that I got the first scent of egg. (Black salt) Unfortunately once I mixed the water and powder together, the egg smell went away completely and I was left smelling nothing but essentially flour.
As per the instructions for scramble, I first cooked the product in a frying pan with a little bit of oil. While it was cooking I noticed the second problem: the texture/consistency. It was off. Way off. It wasn’t that spongy, tofuy consistency. And while I wasn’t expecting that (I know flour won’t act like soy when it’s cooked) it was still a little surprising.
The best I could describe it would be pancake consistency. Even when I tried to break the product up to get the ‘scramble’, it was more like cutting up a fluffy pancake than stirring up eggs.
I mean, you can almost even tell from the picture it looks like I mangled a pancake.
But as I said, I knew them being flour and not soy-based would provide a different consistency and I don’t like to shit on a new product before I taste it, so I carried on.
Once the product was fully cooked, I tried it by itself in scramble form. And I have to say… it was very much more of a pancake than it was scrambled eggs. There was absolutely no black salt tasted and the consistency again was floury, like a pancake.
A different day, I even added extra black salt (and regular salt and pepper) but it didn’t help. Apparently chickpea flour has a very strong taste. Who knew?
While this product unfortunately missed the mark in what they were trying to achieve, they absolutely nailed being a pancake mix! I didn’t even have to add anything other than the recommended water to get nice, fluffy pancakes. Just don’t break the product up in the pan with the spatula to keep them pancake shape.
It cooks nicely and has a great taste. You can’t tell at all that it’s gluten-free, or at least I couldn’t. And when you serve it with maple syrup? It’s downright delicious!
If you’re looking for a new gluten-free pancake mix, I’d absolutely recommend this product. If, however you’re looking for a gluten-free egg substitute, you’d better keep looking.
