C2C, Sam x Jess

“What’s the last thing you do remember?”

“I-” Sam cut himself off as he tried to think, good question… He racked his apparently-empty brain to try and remember something – anything – from before he woke up this morning. After a moment of attempting to will memories into his brain, he squeezed his eyes shut before finally getting a flash of something, “… Stanford.”

“Stanford?!”

“Y-yeah.” Sam nodded his head slowly but didn’t dare open his eyes yet – not trusting the memory to still be there if he moved. “The day Dean showed up and told me Dad was missing. We didn’t find him, but picked up his trail. Dean wanted to keep looking, but I had to be back for that interview. And then…” He shook his head and opened his eyes, re-focusing his gaze on her, “today.”

Jess sat back in her chair, eyes searching the table in front of her absently for a few moments as she took in the giant’s words.

After a few minutes of silence she finally raised her eyes back to his face, “After breakfast, w-we’ll get you in to see a doctor.”

“A doctor?”

“Yeah,” She reached across the table to take his hand, sad smile on her face, “Don’t worry, we’ll figure out whatever this is, together. Okay, Sam?”

“No, I can’t go to a doctor.”

“Why not?”

“Because, I-” Sam’s sentence died on his lips as he realized he didn’t have a good answer. Because it ‘doesn’t feel right’ definitely isn’t a valid excuse. He sent her a sheepish smile, “Uh, sorry. Yeah, we’ll go after breakfast.”

She still looked concerned but slid her hand back away to pick up her fork, anyway.

The giant resisted the urge to let out a breath as he turned his attention back down to his own breakfast, could it really be that easy?

Dean rolled off the doorframe of the abandoned house as he heard the footsteps recede, finally.

He made his way inside before darting up the stairs carefully, machete at the ready. The vamp nest turned out to be bigger than they first thought and though it sounded like Sam chopped through maybe a dozen or so before they dragged him off to God-knew-where, he still had no idea how many bloodsuckers were left.

Not that the exact number mattered much – Dean’d chop through a million vamp’s to get his brother back. But ever since Cas flew off to do his own thing, he had to be extra cautious – apparently, knowing he had a heal-all button on retainer had made him more reckless than he’d realized. And that unfortunately meant he was moving slower-than-normal.

Which meant Sam was possibly getting further away.

Dean carefully moved down the hall of the second floor, opening all the doors he could as quietly as the rusted hinges allowed. With each new door that swung open to reveal nothing but an empty room, he felt himself grow more anxious, come on… where’d they take you?
