Wax Wraps: Are They Worth It?

Loading

No matter where you are in your zero waste journey, you’ve surely heard about wax wraps to replace plastic containers for keeping your food fresh. While the dream of being completely plastic free may be alluring, it’s important to keep practicality in mind.

Before tossing every piece of plastic you own, give yourself a moment or two to really think this through.

First question you’ll want to ask yourself: would you really use these wraps? Sure they may fit the aesthetic of the life you want to achieve, but would you be buying them just for the sake of saying you have them, or because you’ll actually end up using them?

They may keep your fruits and veggies fresh by sealing off the cut ends, but what about your leftover spaghetti? If you throw out all your plastic containers, you’ll have to find some other receptacle to put your leftover dinners in. Unless you plan on storing your spaghetti loose in the wrap?

Most of the wraps I’ve seen come in bundles of 3 or 5, which might work if you’re only planning to use them for your fruit and veggies, but they’re also pretty expensive. And, are you really going to go to the trouble of buying, shipping and having something manufactured because you only want 3? That seems more wasteful to me than just… keeping the plastic containers you already have.

That’s not even mentioning what kind of wax wraps you’ll get. Most wraps on the market are made with beeswax. And as we all know, beeswax comes from you guessed it, bees, that means these wraps aren’t suitable for vegans. Maybe you’re not vegan, in which case, it doesn’t matter what kind you get. But if you are, are you willing to bend your morals just so you can buy a new product that you really don’t even need?

Or, perhaps you think you’ll just make your own wraps out of candilla wax. If you’re planning on doing that though, you’ll have to buy the raw materials: the wax, fabric, essential oils and an iron, if you don’t already have those products on hand. Then there’s the measuring, cutting, using melted hot wax, and you’ll have to put them somewhere while they dry.

I know it may sound like I’m trying to talk you out of buying these wraps, and I kind of am. But not for the reason you think!

I’m not saying they suck or think wax wraps are bad. I actually bought myself the raw materials so I could make my own vegan wraps a few years ago. Do you want to know what happened?

Absolutely nothing.

I was all set to make them one day, and I got distracted and didn’t end up doing them. Then life got in the way, and I ended up shoving all the materials into a drawer and honestly? I haven’t touched them since.

Because I don’t need to!

I have plenty of plastic containers that are doing the job just fine for now. I was also gifted some silicone resealable food bags last Christmas that I haven’t put to the test yet, either.

Reusable products are amazing inventions, and I absolutely love how much more accessible they’ve become. But, it’s hard not to get caught up in the newness and fanciness of it all.

I wish my kitchen was all glass storage containers, silicone bags and wax wraps, but guess what? That’s just not practical! One day in the future, once all my single-use-turned-reusable plastic containers die (or get lent to friends and never returned), then I can start incorporating my reusable swaps.

But as it stands now, my kitchen is full of products that I need to use first. I’m sure a lot of your kitchens look the same way, and that’s perfectly fine! Maybe if you were starting from scratch, you could have a more zero waste kitchen – like if you were first moving out to live on your own – but the fact is we bought (or were gifted) items long before we ever thought about going zero waste, and we’ll need to use those items instead of trashing them because they no longer fit our aesthetic.

Remember: the most zero waste item that exists is the one you already own.

Plastic lives forever, which everyone originally thought was great, and I understand the urge to purge it all from your life now that you’ve learned the dark side to that, but unfortunately, that’s just not practical or the most zero waste way to change your life.

As much as you may hate it, you have to use your plastic containers until they’re unusable, then you can get yourself some more aesthetically pleasing products. Just think of this time as your transition period between how you used to live, and that dream life you’re envisioning.

Dreams take time to get to, so don’t try to rush.

Teen!Chesters, Sabriel, Fluff

Prompt: Punch Day (Sept. 20th)

“Ugh!” Sam let out an annoyed groan and pulled uselessly on the untied tie hanging around his neck, “Come on!”

He stomped a foot in agitation and frowned down at the piece of fabric. Surely tying a tie wasn’t supposed to be this hard? His eyes flicked up to the clock on the wall and he groaned again, I don’t have time for this.

Not wanting to be late, the teen shoved the stupid article of clothing into his pocket before grabbing his suit jacket off the back of his chair. He shrugged it on and took one last look at himself in the mirror, here goes nothing.

“Whoa, Sammy!” Dean came running out of the kitchen, mayo-ed knife nearly slipping from his grip as he leaned himself against the front door, blocking the youngest, “Where’s the fire?”

“Move, dude.” Sam pulled on his brother’s arm in a failed attempt to get him off the door, “I’m already late.”

“You’re such a nerd.” Dean settled against the hunk of wood and raised an eyebrow, “Haven’t you ever heard of being fashionably late?”

“I don’t want Gabriel to think I stood him up.” Sam tugged on his brother’s arm again, harder this time, “Come on, Dean!”

The whiny tone did nothing but make the blonde laugh. He gave his brother a once over before letting out a low whistle, “How come you never dress this spiffy when we go out?”

“Because I don’t care about you.”

“Ouch,” Dean placed the hand holding the knife over his heart and stumbled away from the door a few feet, “That hurt, Sammy.”

Sam let out a breath as he finally managed to rip the door open, bolting down the driveway, “I don’t care!”

Gardein Chick’N Teriyaki Style Bowl Review

Loading

Gardein used to have a few kinds of ready-meal type products back when I first went vegan. There were pizza pockets, cans and even more faux meat selections available. They ended up having to cut a lot of their line in Canada for some reason, which sucks because I would gladly be eating their pizza pockets if they were still available.

It’s been a few years now and they’ve thankfully slowly begun expanding their product line again. Though I’m not sure how far off they are from bringing back their pizza pockets, I was excited to try this ready-meal bowl once they crossed the border.

AterImber.com - The Veg Life - Product Reviews - Gardein Chick'N Teriyaki Style Bowl Review - Gardein Chick'N Teriyaki Style Bowl Pic - vegan food, food reviewer, Gardein, blogger, food blogger, faux meat, healthy meals, ready-meals

This Chick’N Teriyaki Style Bowl is the first of it’s kind I’ve tried. I’ve never had another ready-meal version of this, so keep in mind I don’t really have anything to compare this too.

Usually, not having anything to compare a new product to is great, because then you’re not sub-or-consciously keeping tabs on things it does different than the other product.

That said, even without anything to compare it to, this product wasn’t my favourite thing from Gardein.

For starters, it came in a black plastic container that I think was supposed to look like a faux takeout container. Not only have I been trying to stay away from plastic (and I believe the black takeout container plastic is one of the harder kinds to recycle), it was a lot smaller than I was expecting.

And I know I say that basically every time – you’d think for someone who’s tried as many vegan products as I have, I’d expect things to be on the smaller side by now. But for a product that’s supposed to be an entire meal, it was very small. This could maybe be an appetizer to tide you over before the main course – like having a light soup before the entrée at a fancy restaurant – but if you’re planning on eating just this for dinner? Prepare to stay hungry.

This product also said to microwave it, which I didn’t because I try to avoid using them as much as I can. It actually cooked in the same amount of time on the stove in a pan (about 5-6 minutes) as the cooking instructions said it would.

It was also a lot more apparent just how small this portion was once I had it in the pan and out of the container it came in. It was maybe a half bowl’s worth of rice.

The taste was also not that great. Now, I’m not sure if there’s different ways to make teriyaki sauce, but every food I’ve had that said it was “teriyaki” was some sort of soy sauce concoction. This product however, tasted more like plum sauce.

If you enjoy plum sauce, that’d be a plus, but unfortunately I don’t like it. This made the dish weirdly sweet and it somehow also had a kick to it? I guess it’s the definition of “sweet and spicy”, but I wasn’t expecting that (and wouldn’t have ordered it) from a product that was labelled “teriyaki”.

The plus side of this dish, was that despite it being small, it came with about 10 pieces of chick’n strips. The strips I don’t think were anything special, though. They just tasted like their regular bagged ones.

If I remember correctly, this bowl was either more or about the same price as their chick’n strips bag. (I tried to find the price for this article, but Good Rebel, VeganSupply and Loblaws were either sold out or no longer carry the product)

Honestly, you could probably make a much better version of what this dish is supposed to be if you just bought their chick’n strips separately and combined everything yourself.

Again, if you enjoy plum sauce, spiciness and small portions, you might love this dish! But as for me, while I wouldn’t count this product as “bad” I definitely wouldn’t buy it again – unless it was my only option.

Vegan Fast Food: Starbucks Edition

Loading

In Canada, Starbucks is known as being the coffee company that tried to take over Tim Horton’s corner of the market with their “weird” offerings and too many choices.

While it’s true they have a lot of coffee customization, it turns out this is a good thing!

Almost all of their coffee offerings you’re able to swap out cow’s milk for a plant alternative (soy, almond and coconut are some of the most popular) and their iced coffees you’re usually also able to just say “no whip”.

As if that wasn’t amazing enough, some locations also have vegan foods available!

Starting in the top left-hand corner, moving clockwise:

  • Hot Coffee
  • Iced Coffee
  • Hot Tea
  • Iced Tea
  • Plain Bagel
  • Sprouted Grain Bagel
  • Everything Bagel
  • Cinnamon Bagel
  • Beyond Meat, Cheddar & Egg Sandwich (minus the cheese and egg)
  • Avocado Spread
  • Steal Cut Oatmeal
  • Lentils & Vegetable Protein Bowl with Brown Rice
  • Apples, Peanut Butter & Trail Mix Snack Box
  • Seasonal Fruit Blend
  • HIPPEAS Organic Chickpea Puffs
  • Spearmint Gum

The following products are also vegan, but I wasn’t able to find pictures of them:

• Classic Oatmeal
• Hearty Blueberry Oatmeal

I also reached out to Starbucks Canada (23.06.08) to find out if the following products were vegan, as their website didn’t have the ingredients listed. Unfortunately they didn’t get back to me for these specific products, so I recommend reading the packaging, or calling/asking your local store before purchasing:

  • Starbucks® Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans
  • Squirrel™ Classic Almonds
  • Squirrel Brand® Crème Brûlée Almonds
  • Salted Almond Chocolate Bites
  • Justin’s® Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups
  • Butter Gourmet Popcorn
  • Crispy Apple Chips
  • Perfectly Salted Kettle Potato Chips
  • Salt & Vinegar Kettle Chips
  • KIND® Nuts Cherry & Dark Chocolate Bar
  • KIND Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate Bar

Not all these products may be available at every store location, either. But it’s nice to know you’re able to get something other than a customized drink if you want to.

General, Funny

Prompt: Double Cheeseburger Day

“There’s no time to explain!” He grabbed an empty bag and gestured for the youngest to follow him, “Hurry up!”

The urgency in his brother’s voice helped wake Sam up, getting his Hunter Instinct to kick in and he nodded, grabbing a bag off the table before hurrying up the steps after the blonde. He steeled himself as he made his way through the open door, needing to squint as the sunlight hit his eyes.

Once his eyes adjusted, he stopped short as his brother rushed toward the street – which held an overturned transport truck – and raised an eyebrow, “This was the big emergency?”

The blonde fell to his knees in front of the giant pile of burgers that had flooded out into the street and began arm-sweeping the treats into his bag, “Uh, yeah! I gotta save them!”

“Save… the burgers?” Sam made his way closer and took a curious look up and down the road. Other than the truck and his brother, it was empty, “From what?”

“Haven’t you ever heard of the 5 second rule?”
